honoumikoNot even, really. I really refuse to believe that this is borne of fangirlisms, because this is, indeed, strange.
Not to say that I'm not reacting like a fangirl, of course. XD ICON APPROPRIATE.
Dorotea and I were talking about that rain scene. I watched it again, and it helps to know a bit of Japanese...
You know when Light says "Everyone lies. But I would never tell lies that hurt the ones I love."
I was like "oh, well, whatever, he means 'loved ones' as in people he cares about in his life, because assuming anything more is just a shameless fangirlism, right?"
WRONG.
I listened carefully, and he uses the word "koi." Now, because English is stupid and only has one word for love, things get lost in translation. But Japanese has several. Familial love is "ai." "Koi" is used for passionate love. The word for "lover" is "koibito," literally meaning "love-person" or "love-thing."
So, essentially, L asks him, "Have you ever once told the truth?" and Light responds, better translated, as saying "What are you talking about? It's true I've told lies occasionally. But there aren't many humans who haven't told a lie. People can't be perfect, everyone lies. But I'd never tell lies that would hurt people I feel passionate towards." (Not to mention that L then replies with "I guess that's why you're so popular" AND MASSAGES HIS FEET. wtf.)
Oh, okay, Light, so you're talking about lovers, and you claim you don't tell lies that would hurt them. Well that's all fine and good, Light, but WHY BRING THAT UP OUT OF NOWHERE? IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING. Are you hitting on him? Are you just picking up on the fact that he might like you, and you're just playing with his head?? Has something been going on since you shared that hotel room and this is what you're referring to??? Do you love him, and even if you said you did there's no way to tell because you never answered the question of if you've ever told the truth, thus making this like the two paths to the liars and the truth-tellers riddle?????
THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS PAIRING. SO, SO SO SO MUCH.
that and they'd constantly fight over who's on top.

EDIT months and months and months later: He does not use the word "koi." Asked someone who knows someone who speaks Japanese, and he said I probably heard the word "koe." The fansubs are actually innacurate, and the official release is closer. Imagine that. This argument is completely moot.
Except it doesn't explain the awkward grunting. :3
