May. 7th, 2006 08:26 pmFriday night I went to see the opera "Susannah." AMAZING opera! But there were a bunch of biddies in the audience who were like "well, it was INTERESTING" because it was in English, by an American composer, and even I was afraid it was going to be too atonal, but it was absolutely incredible. So tragic. And all those little bitches would have LOVED it if it were in Italian and set in Italy, because it really isn't any different than any other very simple but tragic plotline.
And...
Today was Madama Butterfly! And, it's so hard when you see something that you have such a CLEAR vision of what the opera should be in your own mind. But, I really liked their interpretation. And I was worried at first about what the rest of the opera would be like, because Cio-Cio-San seemed incredibly stiff in the first act, but totally loosened up and her tone and just everything improved tenfold for the next two acts. And the staging! OH the staging was wonderful. And CHARLES rocked my world (he played Yamadori). And Janice (Suzuki) was awesome! She has an amazing high range really. And Ellen was PERFECT as Kate. It was cool knowing so many cast members, lol. SHARPLESS = AWESOME! omg. And Pinkerton had those high Bs and B flats like it was no one's business. Awesome. But oh wow, I didn't think I'd like to have Kate there Butterfly killed herself, but it worked so well - Butterfly was behind a screen, and she did it, and then Pinkerton shouted her name and such, and he, Kate, and Trouble came out, and it actually made SENSE because she heard them, came out from behind the screen, staggering, because you know she just stabbed herself in the throat, so, she had that last bit of hope (even though there wasn't anything to be hopeful for but it made it so much more tragic) and she just falls, and Pinkerton has his usual horrified/regretful/bullshit look on his face, but Kate was there and she held Trouble and kept him from seeing his mother die like that... it was SO moving. Wonderful. AAH! so good. :) SOOOO Glad I got to finally see that live!
